How to Choose Table Lamps

Height. On a nightstand, table lamps should place the bottom of the shade at about chin height when you sit in bed. On a console, however, taller lamps balance a mirror or artwork.

Pairs. Matching lamps create symmetry on sideboards and on either side of a bed.

Shades. Light shades diffuse light, whereas dark ones direct it down and create a cozy pool of light.
